The Manitoba government introduced new proposed changes to the Employment Standards Code to ensure that victims of domestic violence have job protection, financial security and time away from work to recover.

Employees who are experiencing domestic violence would be entitled to a leave of absence in a range of circumstances including:

  • Up to 10 days to use intermittently or consecutively as needed; and
  • A continuous leave of up to 17 weeks

The proposed leaves under the new legislation would be available in each 52-week period, with up to five days of paid leave and would also include leave for employees to cope with a long-term illness of injury and would extend compassionate care leave to assist workers in caring for a loved one.
