The government of Ontario has amended its Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) requirements to reflect new global standards for classifying hazardous workplace chemicals and for governing information on labels and safety data sheets, effective July 1, 2016.

Workplaces will be allowed a transitional period to gradually phase out the old requirements in order to adjust to the new requirements. During such time, employers must ensure that all workers are trained on both the old and new labels and safety data sheets.

Employers have until December 1, 2018 to complete the transition to the new WHMIS labels and safety data sheets.
