New Leaves of Absence for Working Caregivers

Bill 21, the Employment Standards Amendment Act (Leaves to Help Families), 2014 comes into force on October 29, 2014.

Under the bill, three new job-protected leaves have been created:

Family Caregiver Leave

  • Up to eight weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for an employee to provide care or give support to a family member with a serious medical condition.

Critically Ill Child Care Leave

  • Up to 37 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for an employee to provide care for a critically ill child.

Crime-Related Child Death or Disappearance Leave

  • Unpaid, job-protected leave for a working parent whose child is missing or has died as a result of a crime.
